People needing a home-cooked meal this holiday season were not only treated to a buffet of traditional turkey day fixings, but also a festive atmosphere akin to a big family gathering at Saturday’s Mike Evans Family Foundation Thanksgiving Luncheon held at Galveston’s Historic Water & Electric Community Center.
“I’m happy that everybody can go out and spend some time together,” said Evans, who also expressed his regret for being unable to attend the third annual event in person while he rehabs a hamstring injury. “This is something I’ve always dreamed of doing. It’s something I hope to do for a long time.”
The Ball High and Texas A&M alumnus and current Tampa Bay Buccaneers star wideout, through his foundation, provided 300 Thanksgiving meals for local residents in need. The event, which ran from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, also featured a DJ providing music and plenty of smiling faces.
Mike Evans' foundation has provided $560,000 in college scholarships
Mike Evans said devoting time to his foundation -- which has provided $560,000 in college scholarships to youth in Florida and Texas and supports victims of domestic violence -- has helped keep his spirits up since suffering a hamstring injury in Week 7.
"Just having that power just to just give back and help people out. I've been helped. ... I've had so many people throughout my whole life just help me and my family, and without those people I wouldn't be where I am today. So I have to pay it forward and it brings me joy," said Evans.

Bucs WR Mike Evans hosts youth football camp in his hometown
When it comes to giving back to the community off the field, nobody in the NFL does it better than Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans.
Not only is Evans constantly active with multiple charity endeavors throughout the Tampa Bay area, but he does the same for his hometown of Galveston, Texas.
In fact, Evans was back in Galveston this weekend holding a youth football camp, with Bucs teammate (and fellow Galveston product) Zyon McCollum. Zyon’s twin brother, Tristin, who plays safety for the Philadelphia Eagles, was also in attendance.

Much like the athleticism he has used to build a Hall-of-Fame-caliber NFL career, Mike Evans’ drive to continue giving back is instinctual, ingrained and natural.
“I never do any community work and think about legacy — it’s just how I was raised and what this community means to me,” said Evans, who Saturday morning hosted his eighth yearly free football skills camp for area children at Spoor Field just off the campus of Galveston’s Ball High School where he once traversed the halls as a basketball and football standout.
“I’d do it if there were cameras or no cameras,” Evans added. “I’m just trying to leave Galveston better than when I came up.”

One More Child Provides More Than 7,000 Meals to Texas School
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – To combat food insecurity within the local community, One More Child, Texas A&M and the Mike Evans Family Foundation joined forces to deliver more than 7,000 meals to Cypress Grove Intermediate School. The donation will stock the school’s food pantry and provide nourishment for children to take home.
“We are overwhelmed by the generosity of One More Child,” said Lauren Cummings, sixth grade teacher at Cypress Grove. “The donation will help in feeding our families in need for the remainder of the school year. We are grateful for community partnerships like these that support our campus and students and become part of the Cypress Grove family.”
The school, which has a considerable percentage of students on free or reduced lunch, is nestled within a community that continually experiences food insecurity challenges.
“We are committed to alleviating the struggles that children in this community face due to food insecurity, “said Dr. Leon Battle, One More Child’s Vice President of Stategic Partnerships. “Through this incredible partnership, we are ensuring that children have access to nutritious meals, both in school and at home.”
In 2023, One More Child provided more than 19 million meals through its national and global feeding programs.
In addition to the food distribution, Battle spoke to the students about the importance of physical and digital safety – helping children understand how to stay safe out in public and online. This is part of One More Child’s broader effort to prevent human trafficking through the education of children, teens, guardians, public servants, college students and community members.
“It is a privilege to be able to contribute to the well-being and success of our young people, and we are inspired every day by the impact our efforts are making,” said Brandy Tuck, Texas A&M University Community Events Liaison. “Together, as a team, we are building a brighter future for all, one meal at a time.”
One More Child and Texas A&M will partner again on February 28 to host “Fight to Stop Trafficking,” an event at Texas A&M’s Rudder Auditorium to educate students and members of the community on ways to effectively combat human trafficking.

Through their charitable foundation, Mike Evans — the Galveston native and standout wide receiver for the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers — and wife Ashli Evans brought food and fellowship to locals in need at his second annual Thanksgiving Luncheon in Galveston on Saturday.
“It’s a blessing to be able to give back to the community who has been so supportive of Mike and I throughout the years,” Ashli Evans said. “Our hope is that everyone is able to enjoy a warm, home-cooked meal for the holidays. We are grateful for all the volunteers who made it all possible.”

The summer heat was sweltering, but when it comes to his continued support for and from his hometown, Galveston native and NFL standout Mike Evans describes it as a different — more loving — type of warmth.
“There are always so many familiar faces coming out to support, and I will always be appreciative to this city,” said Evans, who was back on the island Saturday to lead his annual free youth football camp. “That’s why I’ll always give back and why I’ll always be around.”
Mike Evans hosts annual kids camp
Super Bowl Champion and potential future hall of famer Mike Evans hosted his youth football camp for the third year, at his alma mater Galveston Ball High School.
Evans, a Galveston native, credited former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Casey Hampton with the inspiration to hold a camp.
“It inspired me so much and motivated me to be the next player that did this, and I was telling the kids today I hope there will be a few of y’all that can do this,” said Evans. “I’m a big kid at heart, I love them asking all their questions because I know what it’s like to be a kid and that can go a long way.”
Evans hosted the camp to more than 100 kids, for free, ages 8-14 through his Mike Evans Family Foundation.
